At Age of Learning, we were recently excited to announce that Southern California Edison generously invested in the company's Bring Learning Home initiative to give families checkout access to ABCmouse through the LA County Public Library.
Bring Learning Home is a nationwide program that brings together public libraries, funders, and in-kind contributions from Age of Learning to make ABCmouse available to families who may not otherwise have access to high-quality learning resources in their homes. Since 2014, Age of Learning's ABCmouse for Libraries initiative has provided ABCmouse.com Early Learning Academy to public library visitors at no cost for in-library use. ABCmouse is now available in more than 6,000 public library branches nationwide—over 40% of all U.S. branches and almost 80% of branches in California. The Bring Learning Home initiative expands these efforts by partnering with libraries to provide ABCmouse to their patrons on a checkout basis for use at home, with the goal of improving school readiness and reading proficiency. So I am excited to post here about the recent launch of a comprehensive 2nd grade curriculum to expand our award–winning ABCmouse.com Early Learning Academy for children ages 2–8.
The expanded ABCmouse curriculum addresses the learning needs and interests of 2nd grade students with the goal of preparing them for the transition to 3rd grade. The new 2nd grade curriculum includes more than 1,500 learning activities on two new levels in the Step–by–Step Learning Path, providing lessons in five key academic subjects: English language arts, math, social studies, science, and health. Children using ABCmouse at home, in classrooms, in libraries, and in other community institutions will all have access to the 2nd grade curriculum. You probably don't know the name Dave Hendry, but if you have young children, you probably know what I've been working on for the past five years: ABCmouse Early Learning Academy, the award-winning and #1 digital early learning resource for children ages 2-8, serving millions of children across the U.S. and around the world.
I'm currently SVP of Curriculum Management at edtech innovator Age of Learning, which is the company behind ABCmouse Early Learning Academy as well as other ABCmouse products such as ABCmouse for Schools and our ABCmouse Assessment Center. I'm not only proud of my contribution to ABCmouse--which has won awards such as the 2016 Teachers' Choice Award for the Classroom, the 2015 National Parenting Publications Awards Double Gold, the Parents’ Choice Gold Award, the Editor’s Choice Award from the Children’s Technology Review--but also Age of Learning's Educational Access Initiatives to bring high-quality early learning resources to children in need through public libraries, Head Start programs, Community Centers, and other community institutions. But my experience in education predates ABCmouse. I am a nationally recognized expert on achieving learner engagement and understanding through application of principles of instructional design. I've served as principal faculty member in more than 100 teacher institutes for schools and districts throughout the U.S. I have lectured widely about how education policies and teaching practices can prepare today’s young students for future success. My curriculum publications include the award-winning teacher's guides for the instructional television series FUTURES with Jaime Escalante, The Eddie Files, and Interactions: Real Math-Real Careers. I'm also author of the instructional guidelines for the Jet Propulsion Laboratory documentary Catch the Wind: The QuikSCAT Story, the National Center for Atmospheric Research documentary High Hopes, the Borrego Solar Curriculum and Lutron’s Lighting for Learning curriculum, and Instructional Television's Changing Role in the Classroom. I am a two-time winner of the George Foster Peabody award for my work as producer of the documentaries Good Morning Miss Toliver and The Eddie Files. I have also received The Educational Press Association's highest award for curriculum resources, directed development activities for four National Science Foundation projects, served as Principal Investigator in two US Department of Education Professional Development projects, and created The National Math Trail.
